Current Meditations

These are the practices we are currently doing together at the regular weekly guided meditation meetings. (Scroll down for a summary.)

The session recorded here was led recently by the Warden at Shanti Sadan.

This version has been abridged and could be followed for our own regular meditation practice. (21 minutes)

This is a recording of the whole session including an introduction to the principles on which meditation is based. You will probably find it helpful to listen to this version at least once. (40 minutes)

Summary of the Practices

1. Inner preparation

Let us sit in serenity and reverence for these teachings, and reverence also for our own deeper, infinite nature, awaiting discovery as our true self. [About one minute.]

2. Breathing practice

Turn your attention to your breathing process.
Breathe slowly and a little more deeply than usual.
As you breathe in this way, say to yourself the word “light”.
[About five minutes]

3. Visualisation

Picture in your mind a sunrise.
See the sun appearing on the horizon, moving slowly upwards.
At the same time, your surroundings gradually brighten, until the sun itself becomes a mass of dazzling splendour.
[About five minutes]

4. Meditation on a text

OM
THE LIGHT WHICH ANIMATES MY MIND
ANIMATES THE SUN AND THE STARS ALSO
THAT LIGHT IS BLISS
THAT LIGHT AM I
OM

Repeat the text silently a few times until the meaning is grasped, then focus the attention on that. If the mind wanders off, firmly and gently bring it back to the text and the meaning. [Six minutes.]

5. Closing offering
Extend thoughts of unconditional goodwill to all. [One minute]
