Meditation Practices 2018-05

These practices were done at the weekly guided meditation sessions in April and May 2018, and on Saturday 30 June

Scroll down for recordings.

1. Inner preparation

We  pay reverence to that deeper self that is one in us all. [About one minute.]

2. Breathing practice

Breathe slowly, drawing up the in-breath as if from the navel to the point between the eyebrows. With each in-breath say silently ‘Tranquillity’, and with each out-breath, ‘harmony’. [About five minutes]

3. Visualisation

This practice is done in three stages.

1. Imagine that the morning sun, in all its purity and splendour, is shining in the “heart centre”. We visualise the morning sun radiating here, filling our body with light and sending out rays of peace, plenty and power. [Two minutes]
2. In the second stage the light from the sun in the heart centre now spreads to fill our whole body. [Two minutes]
3. In the third stage, the light that fills our whole body now spreads in all directions to fill and illumine all that we are aware of. [Two minutes]

4. Meditation on a text

OM
EVERY MIND IS LIT WITH ETERNAL CONSCIOUSNESS.
MY SELF IS THAT CONSCIOUSNESS,
INFINITE, SELF-ILLUMINED, EVER ACHIEVED.
OM

Repeat the text silently a few times until the meaning is grasped, then focus the attention that. If the mind wanders off, firmly and gently bring it back to the text and the meaning. [About six minutes.]

5. Closing offering

Extend thoughts of unconditional goodwill to all. [One minute]

Listen to or view a guided session with these practices

Here are recordings of a meditation session including these practices, led by the Warden at Shanti Sadan.

This version has been abridged to focus on the practices, and it could be followed for our own daily meditation.

This is the full-length recording, with an introduction and further commentary on the purpose of meditation according to the non-dual teachings. You may find it helpful to listen to this version at least once (42 mins).

Here is the original version, in movie format:
